The basis of the contest contains the ingredients necessary to incite the interest for photographic community, both in Spain and in other countries. Another highly value is the traveling exhibition "Caminosde Hierro" of selected photos, in the major railway stations in Spain. This exhibition has become an imbytant element of cultural offerings for train travelers. Moreover, these activities are complemented by a catalog including the selected photos.

The amount of prize is 16,600 euros -divided into 6,000 euros for the winner, 3,000 euros for second prize, 1,800 for the young author and ten second prizes of 400 euros- attracting a large numbers of photographers. The importance achieved by this contest has led to the Spanish Railway Foundation to be awarded with 1997 National Photographic Prize in the category of Patrons, given by the Spanish Confederation of Photographic .
